When Jesus woke from his mid-storm nap and stilled a deadly storm with just a few words, the disciples’ fear and shock was a reaction to much more than just this one powerful act. Throughout the Old Testament, from creation to the flood to the exodus and in multiple psalms, God alone is the one who controls and commands the seas and the storms. Knowing these stories and poems, the disciples’ reaction is built on a growing understanding that Jesus is somehow God-in-flesh. And if Jesus can calm the storm, God is dwelling in their midst because he cares for their plight. The God over the storm cares for his people.
